Program Description
As you know, Kondar Byte-level Delta Deduplication is a new and revolutionary
technology to create incremental backups of files of a big size.
With Kondar you can create incremental backup files occupying between 10 and
100 times less space than the original files. To do this, Kondar compares the
original file with the modified file and then creates a third, far smaller file
that contains only the differences between the first two files. This third
file is the incremental backup. You can have a daily backup simply by saving
the original file and the incremental backup files.
RIB-it is an easy-to-use tool that we have developed for anyone who would like
to use or test Kondar technology without having to actually integrate it into
an application by using our SDK. We have developed RIB-it as a proof of concept
tool for ISVs that may be interested in integrating Kondar technology into
their applications (backup, databases, HD cloning, etc.). With RIB-it, ISVs can
easily evaluate the power and effectiveness of Kondar technology without having to
actually use our Kondar SDK to make a trial integration.
How to make an incremental backup with RIB-it?
The following are two examples of how to make an incremental
backup with RIB-it presented as an example to test the technology:
- For drastically reducing the size of backups
made with your standard backup programs (numerous files
from your hard disk, etc.).
- First the user should make a full backup using their
usual preferred backup software (for example, Windows
Backup) and then save it to a CD or DVD.
- After this, any time the user wishes to make an incremental
backup they should do the following:
- Make a full backup with their habitual backup
program (for example Windows Backup) and then save
it to a temporary directory in the hard disk.
- Execute RIB-it indicating in the field "Source"
the location of the original full backup (point
1.1 above) that was saved to a CD or DVD.
Then write in the "Target" field the address
of the full backup you have just made (point 1.2.1)
and which is located in the temporary directory of
the hard disk. Next, in the "Incremental Backup"
field put in a file name for the incremental backup
you wish to make (would usually include the date of
the backup) and the address in the temporary directory
where you wish for RIB-it to generate the incremental
backup.
- Finally, click on the button "Create Backup".
- Once RIB-it has finished its work, the incremental
backup can be copied to the CD or DVD and then eliminated
from the temporary directory. The full backup made
prior to the incremental backup (see point 1.2.1
above) should also be erased from the temporary
directory.
- For making incremental backups of very large
files without using any other standard backup application.
There are applications such as E-mail clients or servers,
databases, hard disk images or virtual machines that produce
very large files. In these cases, RIB-it can be used directly
to generate incremental backups without having to use a
standard backup application:
- Let’s suppose you decide to use RIB-it to make
a daily backup of your Outlook mail messages contained
in the file "Personal Folder.pst". In order
to do that, copy this file to your backup support (for
example, a CDROM or a DVD) at the beginning of the first
day before opening and using Outlook.
- After this, any time you have finished your daily
work, close Outlook and run RIB-it. In the field "Source"
indicate the complete path of the original file backed
up earlier to the CDROM, for example: D:\Personal Folder.pst.
- In the field "Target" indicate the complete
path of the current file where Outlook saves all messages:
C:\Outlook\Personal Folder.pst.
- In the field "Incremental Backup", indicate
the complete path where you wish RIB-it to create the
incremental backup file, for example: C:\Backup\02-10-2006.rib.
- In the field "Match Level", select a number
between 1 and 8. These numbers are for setting the speed
of RIB-it and the size of the resulting incremental
backup file. The lower the value, the quicker RIB-it
will carry out its work, but the files created will
be bigger. With a higher number, the resulting files
will be smaller, but RIB-it will take longer to perform
the operation.
- Next, click on the button "Create Backup",
and RIB-it will generate a file of a few MB (with only
the changes in the target file) in the previously indicated
place. Save this new file to the CDROM and erase it
from the hard disk.
How do you restore a backup?
Continuing with the above example, the following information
shows how to restore incremental backups made with RIB-it.
If you wish to restore a file, first indicate in the field
"Source" the complete path of the original file
backed up to the CDROM: D:\Personal Folder.pst.
In the field "Target", indicate the path of the
file to be restored: C:\Outlook\Personal Folder.pst.
In the field "Incremental Backup", indicate the
complete path of the incremental backup file saved to the
CDROM: D:\02-15-2006.rib.
Click on the button "Restore Backup", and RIB-it
will restore the backup to the indicated place.
The field "Match Level" is not used in the restoration
process.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
To use RIB-it you will need at least:
- Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
- Pentium III.
- At least 256MB RAM.
